Wow! Today was my biggest day ever for WhyPad as far as traffic goes. And I’ve gotta tell ya, that’s just fun! 800+ page views, and there are still a couple of hours left to go. Compared to 200-300 on average, excluding weekends when that gets divided in half.

Half the fun was having the little Who’s.Amung.Us widget on the blog to show how many people were viewing in real time. The graph shows that I hit a max of 10 concurrent readers. I just spent about 20 minutes sitting here watching the little globe. Users would come in and their stars would start glowing, then go dark after they left.

This traffic was related to the Contender WordPress theme that I recently released here on WhyPad. It is the same theme that I use on WhyPad, and I am pretty pleased with it, though I do think it needs a bit more color and splash.

Realistically, I don’t expect the traffic to stick around, but it was a lot of fun, even if only for a day. I think Contender may have been in the “new themes” section of one of the theme directories today, explaining the influx. I just hope it’s not too depressing to see my numbers plummet back to their previous levels

Here’s a peek at the Who’s.Amung.Us graph from today…

It’s nothing like hitting it big on Digg, but for me, it was a ton of fun. Cheers!

If you’ve been here before, you’ll notice that WhyPad has a new look. Hopefully a better look, but certainly new. The new theme is called Contender, and is based on the venerable Kubrick. I am releasing it here under the GPL for your blogging pleasure. There’s no need for a demo site. What you’re seeing here at WhyPad is pretty much what you get in the download.

Contender was built with SEO and speed in mind. A lot of the new theme platforms today give you tons of flexibility, but that can come at the price of extra includes and queries. Contender tries to give you what you need with a minimum of fuss. Check out the readme.txt file in the download for tips on how to further customize the theme.

Theme Highlights

3 Columns (2 right sidebars)

Widget ready for 2 sidebars

AdSense ready (just add your AdSense code to included files)

Easy to switch to Gravatar for the top info box on the sidebar (just uncomment the code and comment out the other photo)

Licensed under the GPL

You can remove the footer link back to WhyPad, but it’d be nice if you left it.

Download

Contender WordPress Theme.

Readme.txt

If you find any glitches, let me know. I’d like to keep it updated as much as possible.

Enjoy!

WordPress is ramping up to version 2.7 which will introduce several new concepts to the WP community. One of those is the idea of Child Themes, which Justin Tadlock of ThemeHybrid is already a huge proponent. Justin has done some wonderful work on several WordPress themes that make it incredibly easy to create a professional, highly function site.

I have modified Justin’s Options Light child theme for his Options parent theme to suit my needs and wanted to release the modifications for your theme enjoyment. I call my rendition Options News since I’m using it for a news related blog. See it live at DailyAudacity.com.

Options News is compatible with WordPress 2.6+ and requires the Options parent theme by Justin Tadlock

Here’s what you need to do:

Download Options News

Unzip it and copy it to the wp-content/themes/ folder of your website

Download the Options theme from ThemeHybrid.com

Unzip Options and copy it to wp-content/themes/ folder of your website

Login to your WordPress admin

Go to Design

Cick on the Options News theme…this brings up a priview of your site using the theme

Activate the theme by clicking the Activate link at top right of the preview

That’s it.

Child themes are the wave of the future. They let you build on top of solid, feature rich themes such as Options with little worry that your theme will break the next time Justin has an upgrade to the core parent theme.

Cheers!
